The National Weather Service forecasts partly cloudy skies in Arkansas with warm humid air from the Gulf of Mexico. Through Friday expect scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms as conditions remain unsettled across the state.
A weak trough remains over the state bringing daytime heating and instabilities that may trigger some showers through Friday with a 30 percent today and slightly higher Friday. Extended outlook shows a chance of showers through Monday with a cooling trend. Highs top in the mid to upper 80s today and Friday, 90s Saturday, and 80s Sunday and Monday. lows mid to upper 60s, with Sunday through Monday in the 60s and 70s. Overnight lows vary by location from 60s to low 70s across Pine Bluff El Dorado Texarkana Fayetteville Harrison Jonesboro Memphis Texarkana Fort Smith and others.
The Arkansas Department of Social and Rehabilitative Services appointed Raymond L. Scott of Little Rock as acting director of the Office of Aging and Adult Services. He replaces J. R. Jones who was asked to resign in July after being selected for the post in 1971 by Gov. Dale Bumpers. Dr. Roper B. Best offered no details, calling it a personnel trade.
Obituary notices and funeral details for Elmer L. Joerder 75 of Hope died in a local hospital. Other notices honor Air Force Major Myron H Price Ret. in Williamsburg and Mrs Sarah Lazenby in Kirbyville while John A Limberg of Prescott and Mrs Cross of DeQueen are also remembered with service details and survivors listed.
In Lake Village Arkansas on Wednesday neighbor Mrs Merle Phillips Smith testified that James Williams of Crossett sped from the Degoes driveway the day Maudine Degoes was raped and killed in 1964. The state plans to prove Williams abducted Degoes from her home, drove to woods and killed her.
Ken Coon of Conway Republican gubernatorial nominee voiced concerns that the Arkansas Senate may have acted illegally in ousting state Sen. Guy H. Jones. He warned the rehearing was to appease supporters and could lead to Jones reclaiming his seat, calling the process a confidence game and saying the Senate failed to do the right thing properly.
Fayet teville AP Embree Easterly president of the Independent Bankers Association of America said pressure to repeal Arkansas law against multibank holding companies comes from big banks not Arkansans. Adam Aronson of Mark Twain Bankshares warned only big banks will survive in changing finance. Ten state legislators attended the seminar and a January bill to allow multibank holding companies is planned.
