Reagan Sees No Change in His Strategy at Convention

Gov. Reagan defended his campaign plan after Richard Nixon clinched the GOP first-ballot advantage. He urged unity, asked delegates to back Nixon, and said his timing remained correct despite not entering the nomination early. Reagan contrasted defeat with his ongoing role as California’s governor. The scene unfolded at Convention Hall as aides tried to manage delegates and convey a message of party unity amid Republican tensions.

At the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach, Sen. Charles H. Percy and others led favorite son processions, calling for more favorite sons as delegates cheered. A new rule curtailed outside demonstrators, yet marches and bands continued, with Winthrop Rockefeller nominated as a favorite son and Florida casting its vote for Nelson Rockefeller. A later protest outside Hall referenced the USS Pueblo seizure, urging awareness of the 82 crewmen and hostages.

Loss Blamed Largely on Hesitation

Gov Nelson Rockefeller’s late entry doomed his bid for the GOP nomination in 1964 with Miller blaming hesitation. Rockefeller shifted from not seeking the race to declaring it in Albany after March 21, losing time and support while funding a costly nationwide campaign.
