Heavily Loaded Vessel Seized at Rhone Port

At Rhone a cargo ship was found with about 6 400 pounds of illegal goods including opium heroin and ice. Authorities valued the seized items at seventy five thousand dollars. The contraband was being loaded into the vessel when discovered by officials.

Disabled veterans unit to visit Hope on Aug 13

Hope will be one of 18 Arkansas communities visited August 13 to 15 by the Disabled American Veterans new fleet of mobile Field Service Units. A unit will be at City Hall August 18 from 1 a.m. to 8 p.m. The six 26 foot GMC vans carry National Service Officers to assist wartime disabled veterans and their dependents in securing federal benefits. DAV commander says this tour brings services to rural areas, with 260 full time officers nationwide.

Three Teens Die In Weekend Arkansas Highways Crashs

State Police identified the victims as Willie Gaines Sr., 16, of Stamps, Hickey Randolf Alton, 17, of Fuuke in Miller County, and Allan Wright, 16, of Traskwood in Saline County. Rankin, 16, drove the car that struck a metal rail, while Alten died when his cycle hit a center line and collided head on with a truck. Wright perished when his motorcycle hit a freight train near Texarkana. An unlit intersection on Arkansas 229 near Trashwood claimed another fatality, James Hicks Jr. of Humoke, after losing control of his motorcycle.

Sniper hostage drama ends as Gabron talks down at park bluff

In Griffith Park a 27-year-old Vietnam veteran held three hostages for six hours on a 500-foot hill. Johnny Mare Gabron released them after psychiatrist Dr. Leonard Neff intervened, saying Gabron sought neither death nor murder. No one was harmed. Gabron is jailed for kidnapping at County USC Medical Center.
