Editorial Opposes One Cent Gas Tax in Arkansas
Here and There editorial condemns a proposed one cent per thousand cubic feet tax on natural gas in Arkansas. It argues the tax would fall on consumers, mostly urban residents, raise about 300000 dollars for schools, and ignores the broader burden on rural residents. The piece critiques state conservation leaders and warns of higher utility costs while noting current rate reviews and a push for cheaper rates.

Tax Proposed on Consumers of Gas in Arkansas
A proposed one cent per thousand cubic feet tax on all natural gas sold in Arkansas is being considered for a special legislative session Aug 14. J B Brooks chairman of the Spry Arkansis Board of Conservation sent letters Aug 3 estimating $300,000 annual revenue to be divided 90 percent to common schools and 10 percent to the Board. The letter notes gas use exceeds 30 billion cubic feet yearly, mostly transported from Louisiana Texas and Oklahoma tax free for severance, and argues gas distributed to consumers should bear a fair tax burden.
