Arkansas Weather Brief Reports Heavy Rainfall

Heavy showers and thunderstorms moved across Arkansas on Sunday with eastern areas receiving the heaviest rainfall. Several stations logged more than two inches and many locations saw one to two inches in a short period, causing brief localized flooding. Little Rock received several inches in the event.

Continental Singers to perform in Hope concert at Fair Park

The Continental Singers and Orchestra from Thousand Oaks will stage a 7 30 p m concert of contemporary Christian music at Fair Park coliseum. The 25 vocalists and 15 piece ensemble will perform from a two hour program including anthems hymns and gospel numbers. They tour worldwide and have recorded eleven albums with Share and I Believe in Heaven among latest.Virginia in 1662 became the first colony to declare slavery hereditary.

Letters suggest inviting past Watermelon Festival queens to centennial event

A reader from Bossier City urges The Star to locate and invite former Hope Watermelon Festival queens, including a 1950s queen related to the writer, to the Centennial and Watermelon Festival celebration in August 2024. The letter requests public invitation to reconnect old queens with today's festivities.

Hope Rotary hears Centennial event program in July luncheon

The Hope Rotary Club heard a Centennial celebration program led by Haskell Jones with committee members Mrs. Mary Sue Evans and Mrs. Ruby Crow in costume. Plans include August 21 parades, a big parade with the Eighth Air Force Band, a fireworks display, a country music show, an antique auto parade, flea market and arts exhibits, plus August 22 events.

Henderson State Offers Two Courses in Hope

Dr. Curtis Garner of Henderson State University announces two courses for Hope. Child and Society (graduate and undergraduate credit) will be taught by Patricia Roach. Materials and Techniques for Teaching Reading (EDUC 4773) is undergraduate credit and taught by Norma Bryant. Registration in August, courses run through August 22. Jury Deliberations Enter Second Week in Gurney Trial

In Tampa AP reports the jury in the influence-peddling trial of former Senator Edward J. Gurney entered its second week of deliberations. The six-man six-woman panel has deliberated about 42 hours in the bribery conspiracy case involving Gurney, aide Joseph Bastien, and FHA officials K Wayne Swiger and Ralph Koontz. They are charged with shaking down Florida builders for campaign contributions in return for favored FHA treatment. Gurney also faces bribery and lying counts. conviction could bring up to 42 years and 220000 dollars in fines.

Kunstler ordered from Little murder trial in Raleigh

AP reports judge in the Joan Little case ordered defense attorney William Kunstler out of the Wake County Courthouse courtroom and had deputies escort him to the jail. The 21 year old Black defendant faces first degree murder charges in the stabbing of jailer Clarence Alligood.
