Reporters Freed in Contempt Case Over Hanging in Effigy

In Banville Kentucky two journalists Jack Durham and Wesley Carty were released after Police Judge Jay W. Harlan ended the contempt inquiry. The judge had jailed them or fined them daily since July 24 for refusing to answer questions about Danville's hanging in effigy. The inquiry was halted after two other suspects pled guilty and the court dismissed the reporters, who stood by their pledge to protect newspaper confidence. Publisher Vernon Richardson noted public sentiment favored the reporters though some backed the judge.
