End of Highway No. 4 Jumps Into a Wilderness
Camden Arkansas faces a 12 mile gap on Highway No. 4 toward Nevada County with a newly finished gravel section ending at a tree in a wilderness. Camden Rosston and Hope citizens push to close the final gap shortening the route by about 20 miles. The completed stretch crosses near a landmark tree and remains rough beyond, with winter conditions often impassable. The work, by Ellis and Lewis contractors, has federal and state acceptance and ties Oklahoma and Texas with Mississippi via south Arkansas, aided by a CCC group at Rosston. Mayors and chamber officials long pursued this east-west link once used as the Washington Post Road by stagecoaches and military caravans.
