Weekend Storms Dwindle Across State Reported

The National Weather Service predicts scattered to numerous thunderstorms today with a higher chance in the northwest today. precipitation chances range from 50 to 60 percent across the state with storms declining Saturday.

Two Killed in Arkansas Traffic Crashes

Sheryl Denise Bright, 2, of Sheridan died after a mail delivery vehicle struck her inside Sheridan city limits. Joe D. Russell, 21, of Arkadelphia, was killed when his truck crashed on Arkansas 9 seven miles west of Arkadelphia.

Slayers sought in dentist Dr Elliott abduction murder

Police hunted two masked men after abducting Dr Robert Elliott from his Chattanooga home as his wife watched. He was found shot in the trunk of his car on a rural mine road, Elliott 38, a pediatric dentist. The assailants fled after warning the family, with no one else harmed.

Storms Damage Oklahoma and North Dakota Areas

Locally severe thunderstorms caused crop and building damage in isolated midcontinent regions late Thursday with flash flood warnings in parts of Arizona. A Norman, Oklahoma storm dropped 2 inches of rain and winds to 70 mph. Fargo area saw 60 mph winds and 2 inch hail with crop losses. Tornado sightings were reported near Grand Forks North Dakota and Dell City Texas. Despite damage, the storms brought needed rain to droughty fields. rain likely to continue in the Midwest and Plains with potential flash floods in Northwest Arizona. Temperatures near dawn ranged from 52 to 94 across listed locales.

Cotton growers qualify for marketing services season 1974-75

Miller, Hempstead, and Nevada County farmers are eligible for cotton classification and market news services for 1974-75, per R.M. Brownlee of the Little Rock Cotton Classing Office. Thomas E. Phillips submitted the group application. Raymond Caswell is president, James B. Mills is group representative, and Phillips is alternate. Services operate under the Smith-Doxey Act of 1937. The Little Rock office classified samples representing 697,077 bales for Arkansas in 1973-74.

Toll Free VA Hotline Opened for Arkansas Veterans

Congressman Hammerschmidt inaugurated a toll free line for Arkansas veterans. Roy R. Moore said trained VA counselors will assist with benefits at 1-800-482-8990. Hempstead County has about 2,040 veterans who received over 1 million dollars in VA benefits last year.

Centennial gold coins near sold out in Hope funds

The Centennial gold coins are nearly gone with 12 remaining as of July 29 for $100 tax deductible gifts to the Centennial Committee. The Hempstead County Antique Collectors Club reports 250 bronze coins sold, 750 more available, with plans to mint more if bought. Coins appear in town as necklaces or brooches and are sold at Anderson Frazier, Citizens Bank, First National, Hope Federal and Collier Furniture in Hope.

Farm income shows record breaking rise in 1973

Washington AP The Agriculture Department reports farmers net income jumped 84 percent to 32.2 billion in 1973 from 17.5 billion in 1972, the largest one year gain since 1917. Economists warn 1974 outlook depends on crop production and price movements.

McClendon Qualifies for Regional Honoragain 1975 Corps
