The Star reports July as the highest month for pages and newsprint use, 13 tons, with a record circulation boost though page totals lag May 1974 due to a primary campaign. It notes a Senate bill to raise salaries, critiques deficit spending, and urges fuel and energy reforms to curb inflation and high utility costs.
Secretary of State Kelly Bryant, 66, is reported in satisfactory and stable condition after surgery to remove a neck tumor at St. Vincent Infirmary. A spokeswoman said the tumor was nonmalignant and Bryant had a comfortable night after leaving the operating room. He entered the hospital July 22 for testing. Continued on page two.
President Ford urged Europe to back arms reductions and human rights pledges at a major Helsinki conference. Romanian leader Ceausescu pressed for dismantling foreign bases and withdrawal of troops, while Brezhnev emphasized noninterference in internal affairs and Kissinger called the Soviet speech moderate.
Operation Decoration has gathered 4210 of its 5000 goal to buy Christmas decorations for Hope. The plan includes placing lights along South Main from the depot to Sixth, Third Street from Hervey to Walker, exit ramps from Interstate 30, and the junction of Highway 67 and Highway 4. The Chamber of Commerce will supervise setup and takedown, while the city will transport and store the decorations. Gerald Keith praised donors, with Gilbert Travis collecting 2600 and thanking supporters for helping brighten children’s Christmas. Donations are tax deductible via Hope Centennial Headquarters.

Washington AP reports unemployment fell to 8.4 percent in July, with employment up 630,000 to 85.1 million. The Labor Department notes gains across teens women and Black workers, while long term unemployment rose, and revisions show June’s rate was overstated.
Officials and local merchants debated the downtown renewal project led by Mike Kelly and Tom Hodges. They discussed delays, the twenty five year land use agreement, and fears one way streets until 1995 while Jos Hodges claimed improvements are coming and more foot traffic to downtown Hope.
Three gunmen took three people hostage during a northeast Oklahoma City supermarket holdup. Police surrounded the scene and negotiated via a local TV station. A police-escorted car was offered but rejected. gunmen demanded a van. One hostage was identified as store comanager Ronnie Miller, others as Jack Linn and Gary Stone.
Congress adjourns for a month as a presidential veto looms over extending oil price controls and renewed arms shipments to Turkey. The Senate eased the Turkey embargo 47 to 46, while House leader Madden blocked floor action until Sept. 9. Energy bills would extend controls past August 31, and a separate weapons bill faces budget concerns and academy integration.
The Watermelon City Area Citizen's Band Radio Club sponsors a car rally on Sunday at 1 30 p m meeting at the Hervey Square lot. Participants bring CB radios gas and a picnic lunch. Entry is 2 per car. Drivers receive directions and must answer questions before reaching the destination.
