John McKee a top Dallas crime figure and former Greater Dallas Crime Commission head narrowly avoided prison. He received a seven year probated sentence for embezzling Masonic funds after a seven day trial. He faces two further indictments including a 1970 stock deal alleged swindle and a second embezzlement. The district attorney will decide on trial for the remaining charges. McKee led the crime commission from 1957 until his February indictment and was later revealed to be James Kell Zullinger who deserted the Navy in 1929. The mixed verdict followed a lengthy, sequestered jury case and marks an unusual non-capital sequestered panel in Texas.

Forrest City School Board Ruled Unconstitutional in Discrimination Case
U S District Judge Oren Harris found the Forrest City School Board unlawfully discriminated against black faculty in pay and working conditions and ordered objective employment standards. The suit, filed May 24, 1971 by Mr. and Mrs. John E. Cato as a class action, sought damages for salary differentials since 1965 but the judge dismissed specific race-based contract termination claims. The ruling notes no objective nondiscriminatory criteria for hiring, promoting, or terminating.
