New and Better Atom Bombs Made
The Atomic Energy Commission announced today its new and more effective bombs are being produced on an industrial basis at Eniwetok. Uranium and plutonium for bombs and other atomic energy uses are being produced in greater quantities than ever before. The AEC’s sixth semi annual report to Congress notes progress on medical uses with inexpensive radioactive cobalt possibly a better cancer treatment than radium. It disclosed four ace-in-the-hole uranium sources could be used if current supplies fail. Uranium comes from Belgian Congo, Canada, and Colorado plateau ore. Extensive exploration by AEC and USGS revealed large amounts of very low grade material that could be used in the future to sustain an atomic energy program if imports cease.
