Vote Sought to Refer Auto Regulation Law to Voters

Fort Smith auto dealer Hoyle White leads a petition drive to refer the 1961 Arkansas auto sales regulation law to voters. Attorneys general office approved petition form and organizers have until midnight June 7 to collect at least 25,319 signatures to place the act on the 1962 general election ballot. The measure creates a seven member regulatory commission and licenses dealers salesmen manufacturers distributors and factory reps, with prior similar acts ruled invalid in court. James Alvin Voss a 49 year old farmer was injured when a tractor overturned after hitting a stump while hauling logs. He was pinned under the tractor and died in hospital. Federal land ownership totals about 770 million acres or over a third of the nation's area.
