Gold Coast Cocoa Crisis and Stamp History
Portuguese and British rulers opened the Gold Coast coastward region and established cocoa as the main export. The colony, forested and rich in minerals, produced 40 percent of the world cocoa, driving prices down and prompting farmers to burn beans while rains renew crops. Ceded to Britain in 1871, it covers 93,000 square miles and issues its own stamps, including a 1926 issue.
