A squall line moved through Arkansas overnight bringing severe weather. Tornadoes or funnel clouds were reported in Turrell Cotton Plant Cedarville Crawford County and Searcy as the line formed in northern Arkansas early Thursday.
The Hope Star reports showers and thunderstorms possible across Arkansas with an upper level disturbance fueling instability. Station damage noted near Turrell on I-55, and Fontaine near Greene Craigh county line spared injuries as a barn and tree were affected. Forecast calls for mild, variable cloudiness with highs in the 60s and overnight lows in the 60s, with rain chances through Sunday. Rainfall totals from the 24 hours ending 7 am include Little Rock 1.04 inches and Jonesboro 1.25 inches.
Ground breaking at 10 am for the new First Federal Savings and Loan Association home in Hope. The 5600 square foot concrete and glass structure will sit on 225 by 75 feet of land between Southwestern Bell and Branch General Hospital, with drive through and parking from Main to Elm. Architects Reinheimer Crumpton & Associates. contractor Central Contracting Co. Completion aimed for late fall with occupancy by January 1 1976. The bank, chartered in 1933 as Hope Federal, changed to First Federal earlier this year, citing growth across Hope Hempstead and Southwest Arkansas. Officers and directors listed.
Barbara Martin of 214 West Seventh Street Hope has been accepted for registration at Harding College in Searcy for the Fall semester. She plans to major in elementary education and will join the student body after graduating from Hope High School on May 12.
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will run a hunter and firearm safety instructor course for teachers in Hempstead County at Hope High School starting May 6. The four hour session will qualify teachers to teach a six hour course to junior and senior high students. Open to anyone 21 or older who wants to become a certified hunter and firearm safety instructor.
Obituary notices honor Samuel Christian 62 of Clehit and family survivors across Arkansas Oklahoma and Texas with funeral at Pickens Assembly of God. John Spragins 77 of Dallas and Dad Beckham 83 of Shreveport also noted with services. Nottingham shop story reports Bishop Ellis opening a St Vincent de Paul goods shop aiding nearly 200 families in first week.
Bob Bledsoe of Hope announces his plan to enter the ministry with his wife Debbie Watson and their son Bart. He will move to Fort Worth to attend Southwestern Baptist Seminary in May after farming on Rocky Mound Road and graduating from Ouachita Baptist University. He will preach his first sermon at 7 p.m. Sunday and the public is invited.
Estimated cattle receipts 850 this week up from 715 last week and 432 year ago. Slaughter cows and bulls steady, feeder steers 1.90 to 2.00 lower, feeder heifers down about 1.00. Replacement cows 100 to 150 per head, cow calf pairs 125 to 185 per pair. Iowa poll shows Ford mildly approved or undecided by about the same as disapproval.
