Roosevelt seeks end to tax exemptions on government income
President Franklin D Roosevelt asked Congress to remove prompt exemptions on income from all future government bond issues and on all government salaries. He argued exemptions stemmed from judicial decisions and could be eliminated by a short simple statute likely to be upheld by the courts. Arkansas Supreme Court Rules Mutual Consent Needed for Three Year Divorce
The Arkansas Supreme Court in a five to two decision held that the three year separation divorce law requires mutual agreement between spouses. Chief Justice Smith wrote that the act cannot be invoked when a husband moves to a hotel after a wife leaves for a visit, disregarding her wish to reunite. The ruling overturned a Union chancery decree granting Dr. D. E. White an absolute divorce from Mary Lynn White over these circumstances. Separate desertion grounds remain unaffected.
