Young Lawmaker Dies in Crash of Plane

Albuquerque April 21 rep Robert Lewis Coffey 80 died in a P-80 crash near Kirtland Air Force Base after a partial power failure. Coffey a wartime hero and former congressman held colonel rank in the air force reserve. Witness Lt Col William Ritchie watched the crash as Coffey’s plane rose briefly then plunged into an arroyo after leaving March Field. The engine and fuselage were separated. Coffey died instantly. crash crew recovered his body. An investigation was ordered to determine cause.

State Legislative Council Heads by Sen Trussell

Hendrix History Chair to Retire After Term

History instructor Dr. Staples of Hendrix College will retire at term end after four years on the history faculty. He will be succeeded by W. C. Botham, announced by Ellis of the Methodist school. Staples, 70, born in Guinea, attended Emory and Columbia, authored Reconstruction in Arkansas and Political History of Arkansas 1875-1908, and coauthored Our Land And Our People. He is recognized as an expert on Civil War and Reconstruction history.

Arkansas council leaders elected to two year chair rotation

Senator Weems Trussell of Fordyce and Rep. DeWitt Poe of Mound City were elected co chairmen of the Arkansas Legislative Council at an organizational meeting. The body, recreated by the 1949 legislature, will alternate chairmanship between the two houses every two years and a committee was named to receive applications for the research director post. Elsewhere, West Memphis mayor P. M. Dacus opposed moving radio station KTHS from Hot Springs, saying it would not benefit the area. Receivers for the Missouri and Arkansas railroad asked a Fort Smith judge to discharge them, which would revert control to owners.
