A 65 year old man with a parental artificial heart may have brain damage after a six hour operation to save his life at Methodist Hospital. Doctors say the device, about the size of a grapefruit, was implanted outside the chest and could prolong many lives though the patient remains critical within 12 to 24 hours. Surgeons led by Dr. Michael E. DeBakey from Baylor and Rice universities reported improvement with no heart failure, but the outcome remains uncertain.
