Arkansas Fruit Crops Fail To Regain Lost Ground In 1950s
Arkansas fruit production saw sharp declines from 1952 to 1961 due to drought and high costs. Strawberries fell from 17 000 acres to 7 500 and never recovered. Watermelons also shrank from 12 700 planted acres in 1955 to 6 200 in 1960s, with yields and values dropping. Growth stalled as mechanization and canning plant locations rose slowly. Florida and California led watermelon and strawberry output nationally.
