The Commerce Department reports the first quarter GNP jumped 14.3 percent at an annual rate to 1.235 trillion dollars, with inflation at 6 percent. Consumer spending drove most growth, with durable goods and autos leading gains, while analysts note inflation outpacing goals.
Elmer R. Brown a longtime area teacher principal and superintendent and Hempstead County school supervisor for 21 years died early today in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Friday at The First United Methodist Church with Rev Norris Steel officiating. Burial in Memory City. Survivors include his widow a son Larry Brown of Hope three brothers and three sisters. He began teaching in 1930 at DeAnn and later served as superintendent of Guernsey Columbus Patmos and as a classroom teacher at Patmos. In 1945 he became Hempstead County school supervisor.

State Sen Guy H Jones of Conway refused to predict whether he will be expelled from the Arkansas Senate after his two income tax evasion convictions and two false tax return counts. He received a three year suspended sentence and a 5000 dollar fine in federal court. Jones suggested litigation could set a court precedent over his seat and defended his conduct while maintaining he is not a lawbreaker. He claimed any tax errors were not intentional and said he would back Fulbright and McClellan for re election.
LITTLE ROCK AP new rules proposed by the state Public Service Commission staff would ban promotional advertising by electric and gas utilities and bar passing advertising costs to consumers. The rules would allow institutional and consumer ads if stockholders cover costs. police exemptions for research gifts remain. Utilities would review proposals and comment by May 18. leaders from Southwestern Bell and Arkansas Power & Light questioned legality and wisdom of the limits.
