Bell System executives salaries raise stockholder questions
A statement of executive salaries Wednesday urged maintaining the Bell system as an institution of opportunity for the best brains. A board drafted resolution suggested paying more to attract better men, amid questions from about 40 stockholders at the annual meeting. Gifford defended the salaries, noting 680,000 stockholders. Julian J. Pierce had proposed publishing all salaries and cutting the president to 75000 and others to 22500, both motions failing. The dispute followed exposure of high pay in Splawn's report to Congress, which cited Gifford’s 1938 pay of 212000 and the generosity of top executive compensation.
