The Associated Press reports showers and thunderstorms will intensify today and tonight across Arkansas. A cold front from the west will push east, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds and possible hail in the northwestern areas before clearing by Saturday.
A weather note details a few Saturday showers in the eastern state, a cold front passage bringing northwest winds and a warming trend by Monday. It lists overnight and daytime temperatures across cities, and gives subscription rate figures and staff credits.
Washington AP reports Rep. George Hansen of Idaho was sentenced by U.S. District Judge George Hart to two months in federal prison for two misdemeanor campaign finance violations. The judge gave a one year sentence total, with two months to be served, the remainder suspended on probation. Hansen, father of five, expressed humility and declined further comment.
Federal marshals seized voter material from Conway County clerk’s office, saying ballots from the January 16 election except Ward I were destroyed. 45 ballot boxes and two voter registration binders were moved to Little Rock for a federal grand jury session on April 28. Subpoenas went to Clerk Jack Bland Treasurer Jim Huett County Judge Tom Scott and other officials with possession of materials from the election in Senate District 21. The burning of remaining ballots occurred to clear boxes for the January 28 special election.

A 35 year old Chinese clerical employee at the Cambodian consulate in Hong Kong fell to his death while attempting to raise the red and blue flag of the former Cambodian government on a fifth floor flagpole. Police investigated and no Cambodian officials reported for work in Phnom Penh amid reports the consulate was closing.
In Beirut Scattered machinegun and bazooka fire persisted through the night and a shop was blown up amid a five day street war. Officials say the cease fire generally held though fighting continued. Casualties exceed 170 killed with hundreds wounded including civilians. Security forces joined patrols under Lebanese supervision as Phalangists clash with Palestinian guerrillas. Other Middle East items note riots in Nile delta textile plant and UN Security Council actions on Sinai. Prime Minister Rashid Solh announced the cease-fire Wednesday.
