Envoys Brand False Soviet Spy Charges

Washington reports Ambassador Walter Bedell Smith branded Soviet charges that American correspondent Robert Magidoff spied for the U S Embassy in Moscow as false. Smith denied the accusations after Magidoff was ordered out by the Soviet government, stating embassy personnel are restricted to authorized sources. Magidoff, who came to the U S in 1922, has been a National Broadcasting Co. correspondent. Miss Cecilia Nelson, his accuser, had worked at the American Embassy in 1943-44. The State Department noted Nelson’s past and family ties in Russia. Dispatches said Magidoff planned to leave the USSR soon. A separate note mentions discussions of a tunnel under the English Channel dating to 1867.
