Sorghum smut is a serious disease in some sorghum varieties but can be controlled by seed treatment with copper carbonate dust or New Improved Ceresan. Copper dust uses 2 ounces per bushel. Ceresan requires half an ounce per bushel and 24 hours of bin storage outdoors due to its toxicity. Corn smut is managed by sanitation and crop rotation. Interchange of tools and expanded production strain the machine tool industry. 1942 tool demand totals two billion dollars, with 1941 output at $840 million.
