Taft Sees Senate Passage Of Housing Bill

Senator Taft predicts the Senate will pass his Taft-Ellender-Wagner long range housing bill. He says there is enough support without debt, while Senator McCarthy doubts the final outcome and warns the House will likely reject such a measure. Fourteen McCarthy amendments were added yesterday as Taft seeks to substitute his version. Taft and McCarthy differ on only a few major points amid a days long dispute. Taft, a Republican presidential hopeful, argues the bill would boost home construction with a target of 35,000,000 new dwellings by 1958. The Senate is in recess as debate continues.
