Supt James H Jones announces public schools will run on a short schedule Friday with 2 p m dismissal and no extra Easter break due to earlier illness and weather closures. Sheriff Jimmie Griffin warns graveside theft will be prosecuted, amid recent incidents at Huckabee Cemetery. Six new Conner Girl Scout Council directors include Thomas E Hays Jr of Hope. George Frazier and Dr Lester Sitzes attend Rotary District Conference in Hot Springs. George Peck, club president, plans to join Hope men on Thursday. Police Chief Alvin Willis reports Joe Craig a Prescott High graduate will join the department as patrolman this month. Mrs Craig is Dr Lloyd Guerin’s office secretary. The Hempstead Scottish Rite Masonry group will extinguish lights Monday at 7 p m with Ted Maryman delivering the message.
President Johnson surveyed tornado and flood damage across the Midwest. The Red Cross reported about 31,000 people affected by floods across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota and Illinois. Flooding on the Mississippi near Minneapolis Saint Paul neared a crest of 27 feet with 24.65 feet observed today and evacuations continuing.
The Hope Council of Garden Clubs hosts its twenty first annual flower show May 6 from 2 to 6 pm on the Hope Youth Center lower floor. Theme Spring Awakening. Tea will be served. Garden Gardenia and Lilac Garden clubs run event with multiple chairmen and junior classes.
