Cuban Coins Have All But Disappeared
MIAMI FLA AP The Cuban Economists Association in exile said virtually all coins have disappeared from circulation in Cuba. Jose Alvarez Diaz, president, said the Cuban government announced last February plans to recall 70 million pesos in coin and currency to curb inflation. He said the government is exchanging 20 million pesos of lighter metal coins to replace those withdrawn. Cubans hoarded coins as the peso fell in value, the economists reported. The peso, worth a dollar before Castro, is officially pegged at a dollar but worth little outside Cuba.
