A Hope trucker complained about no warning signs at the Interstate 30 and Hy 4 North overpass. The editorial supports his claim after surveying the site and notes the danger when large rigs turn and motorists slow for exits.
The board opens with the new city manager and lists attendees including Bill Butler, Charles Jester, Leonard Ellis, John Swift, Mayor Mel Thrash, Sally Andrews, Floyd Young, Austin Hutson and Charles Buckey Sharpe. August roster shows Bill Butler, Charles Jester, Leonard Ellis, Jerry Keith, Mayor Strong, Mrs Andrews, W L Tate and Floyd Young. Mel Thrash is noted as vice mayor not pictured.
The Hope Board of Directors, with new city manager John Swift, approved moving Spring Hill Road toward Highway 67 and set right of way appraiser values. They absorbed a higher city employee insurance cost and adjusted meeting times to the first and third Tuesdays. Executive session discussed Hempstead County Black Progressive Men's League and personnel policy development led by Swift.
The Zambian government said Zaire air force jets bombed two villages and a mission hospital in north west Zambia over the past three days. President Kaunda sent a fact finding team and a message to Mobutu. Moroccan troops dig in around Kolwezi as Katangan exiles move to set up a civil administration.
Detroit police say a 13 year old boy Kenneth Brown is in custody awaiting charges after allegedly shooting 11 year old Richard Gerhart and hiding his body in an attic. A witness, William Hedges 10, saw Brown load a double barreled shotgun and the body was found in an attic crawl space. The two boys reportedly argued after a window incident and Brown threatened to beat Richie. Continued on Page Two.
A Missouri Pacific freight train derailed six miles northwest of Conway. A locomotive and 24 cars jumped the track, three cars stacked high, and a half mile of track was uprooted. No injuries or fires reported. The grain lumber and sorghum train was en route from Kansas City to Little Rock. The accident occurred about 7:50 a.m. Three locomotives and other freight cars remained on the track.
Two men robbed the Ramada Inn in Jacksonville early Tuesday, according to Jacksonville police.

President Carter pressses Florida lawmakers to back the Equal Rights Amendment ahead of a key state senate decision. Midge Costanza says Carter and Mondale urged senators to vote yes to avoid harming ratification chances. The ERA has 35 states approved and needs three more before March 1979. Carter also commuted G Gordon Liddys 20 year Watergate sentence to eight years making parole eligibility July 9. He met Soviet Ambassador Dobrynin and signed a bill forcing Congressional vote on pay raises. He also signaled possible partial approval of some dam and water project plans.jpg
James Kenneth Aylett of Route 1 Hope was taken to a Little Rock hospital after a two car crash at 6 55 a m Tuesday at West Sixth and Highway 174. The other driver Kevin Jones of Route 22 Washington had minor injuries and was charged with failure to yield. Officer Rusty Paul investigated.
State officials say a fuel tanker collision damaged a small bridge on I-30 at the Hot Spring Clark county line. Repairs will take time with about 150000 dollars in damage. Driver Arnold Watson of Alexander was not injured. Eastbound traffic will divert eight miles on U S 67 to Arkadelphia and Friendship.
Arkansas Governor Pryor announced steps to ease the 2,500 inmate cap. Plans include using up to 80,000 from the emergency fund to accelerate Cummins Prison Farm and Tucker Reformatory projects for about 100 new beds, plus three work release centers and federal funds for operation. He seeks a 350,000 federal grant for 25 probation officers and a state probation program.
Washington AP reports President Carter’s energy plan could start a five cent federal gasoline tax rise and a crude oil tax aimed at boosting coal use. A “gas guzzler” tax on inefficient autos starts at 412 dollars per car, rising to 2500 dollars.
AFL CIO clothing industry unions led by the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers and the International Ladies Garment Workers Union plan a campaign of protests in 40 states against rising foreign competition. They urge higher tariffs, import restrictions, and density of action, with a White House meeting sought to press President Carter for relief.
