New York Plans Face to Face Review of Welfare Cases
New York City aims to cut waste in its welfare program by recertifying eligibility and classification through face to face interviews across about 500,000 welfare cases. Human Resources Commissioner Jule Sugarman said the effort could save an estimated 63 million yearly and will start with drug addicts, then aid to dependent children, home relief, and other case types. The plan targets reducing erroneous payments, with 35.6 percent of cases showing some error and a total caseload of 503,291 welfare cases totaling 1,244,721 people. The federal share funds nearly half the budget, and photo identification cards will be issued to recipients to curb check forgery, at an initial cost of about 2 million dollars and 900 thousand annually thereafter.
