Penalty of one dollar for late poll tax assessments
LITTLE ROCK Voters who miss the poll tax deadline may still obtain a receipt for voting by paying a one dollar delinquent assessment. A 1937 reform was only partly completed. Senator Armil Taylor of Chirksville backed a bill to end midcycle assessments, prohibiting offices from assessing poll tax except at the regular tax time. The bill passed the Senate 21 to 1 on March 2 and moved to the House, but action stalled as the session adjourned. The April 10 Texas deadline for tax assessments looms. Attorney General Jack Halt noted delinquent assessments can still be made after tax books reach the collector, through the county clerk, up to midnight June 4. The Supreme Court ruled that delinquent or yearly poll tax issues issued earlier were not valid for voting.
