Plan Test Suit on School Warrants
LITTLE ROCK A test suit is planned to decide if collectors must accept school district warrants for school taxes. The state Supreme Court has not ruled directly on the issue, but held collectors cannot be forced to accept them. Assistant Attorney General John Caldwell said collectors might accept warrants with discretion, urging cash for interest and maturities and warrants for the rest. Many traders cashed warrants with taxpayers, while collectors were unsure and reluctant to take risks on settlements. Caldwell’s ruling allows acceptance until the court rules otherwise.
