Unemployment Picture Some Brighter
Washington April 4 The census bureau reports March unemployment fell 561,008 from February to 4,123,000 the low since eight years earlier Secretary Sawyer calls the drop encouraging and signals potential spring gains. Employment rose nearly 800,000 from 6,953,000 in February to 7,551,000 in March, with optimism tempered by cautions about seasonal effects and the coal dispute. Directors note continued improvement in unemployment insurance claims through March 25 and a 6.7 percent rate in early March. Stanley Marcus urges employers to maintain full employment by creating jobs and producing new goods. The CIO plans to bring union groups to Washington to discuss unemployment with officials and lawmakers.
