In a light column, Alex H. Washburn recalls helping neighbor Gene Allen with an improvised squirrel feeding scheme using headless nails and corn. A Rosston Road neighbor supplies ear corn as blue jays and blackbirds observe. Also notes a paper pulp advance from sycamore trees and a memorial to Dorothy Fields.
United States officials plan to distribute Patterson's photos and information to the public as the search for John Patterson continues. The 31 year old diplomat was last seen March 22 leaving the U S Consulate with an unidentified man. A ransom note demanding 500000 dollars was found at the consulate door.
In accordance with Act 289 of 1969 the Hope Public Schools will census all children ages 1 to 18 who reside in the district on April 1 1974 or who transfer here. Bill Reyenga and Kathleen Jordan will conduct the enumeration in April. Community cooperation is essential as the count informs school funding and programs.
Six members of a Phoenix family were killed when two cars collided on U S Route 80. Cars separated, one careened 100 feet down a canal, landing upside down in swift water. The dead are Robert Young 44 Betty 40 Anita 17 Mike 13 Lisa 10 and B J 17 months. Young’s brother Gary unknown age hospitalized with a broken neck. Five others were injured including Roy Haenfl er 44 Shirley Mae 44 Andy 21 Nancy Carvalho 4 and Jeff Schuster whose details were not learned.
For the 21st straight day Syrian and Israeli armor and artillery exchanged fire along the Go lan Heights ceaseline. The Syrians fired first in the southern sector, reported no casualties. Both sides claimed heavy artillery duels and tank battles on four hills overlooking Quneitra. Israel said a Syrian commando penetration attempt was repulsed. Military leaders warned the front was deteriorating as cabinet talks continued in Washington and Jerusalem.
Star Staff Writer David Hughes reports a three month Hempstead County drug probe by Arkansas State Police leading to several weekend arrests. Juvenile cases require hearings. 40 to 60 more arrests are anticipated for marijuana sales. Circuit Court sentences include Larry Simpson eight years with five suspended and Mike Taylor six years with four off for good behavior. Further hearings involve Kermis Thompson and Tommy Dean Lindsey as other suspects await trial.
Former Governor Orval Faubus, 64, of Huntsville declared plans to seek a seventh term in the Arkansas governor race. He announced in Little Rock that he would pursue the Democratic nomination in the May 28 primary, targeting fellow Democrat David H. Pryor while noting Lt. Gov. Bob Riley also seeks the nomination. Faubus condemned outside financing in Pryor’s 1972 bid against Senator John L. McClellan, citing labor support totaling over $70,000 and accusing outside interests of trying to influence Arkansas politics. He pledged to run on a platform opposing perceived outside dictation and influence. The news conference was organized by Pertin Jones in Searcy.
Secretary of State Kissinger says the Paris peace accord commits the United States to support South Vietnam with lasting aid and self defense measures. Senator Fulbright counters that the accord is only a statement of intent not a binding obligation without Congress approval. The dispute centers on how far U S involvement and debt obligations extend under the Paris agreement.
New York AP report shows four Soviet tanker shipments from Tuapse loaded with gasoline totaling over 15.5 million gallons docked in New York and New Jersey since January. Despite public support for the Arab oil embargo, Moscow pressed for profits and continued oil sales to the United States during the boycott.
AP Farmwriter Don Kendall reports USDA figures show overall food costs in 14 cities edged downward from mid January to early March. Seasonal drops affected fruit vegetables pork and eggs while bread cheese and brewer chickens rose. Japanese broiler and tomato prices also climbed due to energy and input costs.
Seventy women attended the Centennial organizational meeting Friday at Hope City Hall. They adopted the name Centennial Belles and planned a public meeting on April 19 to elect officers and assign squads.
