The Apple Growers Union establishes a labor bureau to supply labor for strawberry growers and orchardmen. Secretary C H Sproat says Sunday newspaper ads drew many applicants and daily inquiries continue. Growers are urged to report needs promptly with numbers, housing, camping, and arrival plans to organize a systematic operation.
FP Davidson withdrew 14 acres of orchard from sale citing promising crop conditions in berries and apples across the valley. He says weather in the east and middle west shows every year the Oregon climate favors apple growing, and he plans to expand berry production. News of midwestern fruit destruction is not expected to dampen Hood River fruit prospects.
Laula W. Hill of the Great Northern railway telegrams George T. Jackson of St Louis offering 4,000,000 acres of free government land in the Northwest near St Paul for settlement. Jackson plans to give 4,400 Arkansas farm acres to the unemployed of St Louis area. Philanthropists offer about 60,0000 more acres from Manitoba to Texas.
Mrs Isaac Ford pleads for help to locate her son Earnest Ford who vanished from Hood River February 12 after a family dispute. The youth, tall for his age with dark hair and blue eyes, was last known heading into eastern Oregon before a severe winter storm. She seeks any news as she nears distress. Also notes A I Newton reporting first ripe berries at Hood River and C A Shorte of White Salmon bringing berry samples to the News office.
Professor E E Coad argues consolidation broadens student growth and leadership through larger schools. He notes transportation and rail prospects are less critical than moral environment and pupil contact with diverse viewpoints for civic preparation.
Professor B P Stout of Pasadena arrives next Saturday to assist Dr TB Ford in Hood River as he tours Red Bluff and Portland venues. He is praised as a Christian gentleman and gifted singer whose songs stir patriotism and draw large crowds.
Capt. W. B Buchanan reports Regulator Line aims to crowd Open River boats from Hood River landing by placing a wharf boat at the high water site. Dispute centers on fair landing rights and open competition for river freight before Hood River residents and commercial groups.
Census enumerator Lloyd Catterlin urges Hood River residents not yet enumerated to call the News office by May 11th to ensure a full count. The News backs the effort and pleads for valley residents to participate and report uncounted individuals.
The city council plans enlarging the O R N freight depot on Railroad Street with a proposed extension, surveyors estimate costs, and authority may be given soon. Mrs A Shaw of Seattle supports a Hood River canal Lyceum showing diverse winter entertainments featuring Jas Wo Molk and Chas B Ratte. The Woman's League held a lively meeting with speakers including Prof McLaughlin and Rev H A Mcdonald and discussed ongoing community work.
