Protest Over Telephone Rates Draws Valley Meeting

A joint Merchants Association and valley residents meeting at the Commercial Club discussed rising telephone rates. Leaders cited poor service and cited agreements with the farmers’ line, while plans for a mutual company to deliver cheaper service gained support from local figures and out-of-town speakers.

Local firm leads in Hood River land sales

Devlin and Firebaugh headed a string of large property deals in Hood River last week. The biggest sale was a tract of acres on the C. ER. Markham place in Oak Grove bought by E. L. Hall, manager of Portland Coke and Gas. Mrs. Hall will move in soon. Mr. Hall will join when able. Other notable deals include HC Coleman purchasing ten acres of improved fruit land from Fred T. Lisco and selling ten to AOL Wheeler of Indianapolis for 12 000. Sehall sold 21 acres in two parcels, including ten acres bought by Miss Bessie Henry and one by KOO Mahany for 12 100. The Frank 8. Hammond estate saw 35 acres sold to BP Emery of Oronha for 86250, while K. Inaba and M. Sotani bought acres of the Woodworth property to build. additional 20 acres to Fordham B. Kimball of Boston for 19 000. Smaller deals included five acres W. T. Gardner to Harry LaVein and five acres China, Wallace to J. T. Mortarity.

Experts Praise Hood River Valley Growth and Co op Grasp

United States Agricultural Department figures head G H Powell and E Chilcott studied Hood River during a week visit. Powell praised Hood River as the nation s premier apple district and lauded its cooperative association while noting improvements in citrus packing cut orange decay from fifteen to under three percent. Chilcott, head of dry land farming, oversees sixteen stations in the west and cited arid region gains in Utah and elsewhere. They planned a lengthy trip through eastern Oregon fruit and dry land farming areas before returning to Washington.

Automatic Gas Light Company promotes underground lighting plant

The Automatic Gas Light Company demonstrates lighting heating and cooking machines at Gould and Spyder’s shop in Hood River. The units install underground outside and provide a complete high grade lighting system with little care. Residents and farms in the valley show interest as several machines have been sold. John A Robinson presents the machine and invites public investigation.

Disowned Daughter Inherits Estate After Long Search

Mrs. Margaret Benson, only child of Peter Kopke, claims his estate now believed valued at about $7. She was once missing, thought to be nonexistent, but a notice in California papers led to her discovery. Kopke's will had no provision for her, enabling her to inherit the entire estate by law. She arrived with her husband and reconnects with old friends, while a money loan offer appears from Geo. D. Ulberts on & Co.

County Republican primary results show delegates chosen in all precincts except Cascade Locks with strong turnout. Delegates meet Saturday at Odd Fellows hall at 2 pm to elect a county assembly delegation for the state assembly, amid high party enthusiasm and calls for prompt attendance.

Wenatchee Wine Ratings Move Sparks Spokane Talks

Ira D Edwards leads a Wenatchee Commercial Club committee to press for Winesap apples to be rated among top grades at the National Apple Show. If denied, Wenatchee may skip displaying at the Inland Empire exposition. Also a rural route subscription drive seeks £50 for mail carrier incentives. Groundbreaking set Thursday at 7:00 pm for a Methodist church annex with plans for rapid fall completion.
