Fire destroys Herman Pregge’s Oak Grove house
Fire destroyed the old Oak Grove homestead of Herman Pregge on Friday afternoon about three o'clock. The family was away at Mrs. W. Pregge's, and neighbors saved nearby structures. The apple storehouse narrowly escaped, with several hundred boxes of apples saved. the house was insured and most losses were expected to be covered.

Chinook Melts Snow After Warm Weekend in Hood River
A strong Chinook wind and sun rapidly melted 2 to 3 feet of snow in the valley. River levels rose as snow thaw continued, while power plants guarded intakes. Temperatures reached 62 during Saturday’s warm spell and cooled to 40 Monday with 38 overnight.

Refuse Inspectors For Frozen Fruit On Coast
Officials of the Pure Food Board say they have no authority to place Government Inspectors in Pacific Coast packing houses to inspect citrus fruits before shipment. The board had prohibited sale of frozen citrus fruits in the cold snap, and growers asked for in-house inspections to avoid losses from condemned shipments when sent to Eastern markets.

Extension Course to be Given Local Ranchers
An Oregon Agricultural College extension course will be offered in the county from February 17 to 20. Horticultural and agricultural experts led by Professors Lewis Boquet Jackson and Cordley will teach at Parkdale Pine Grove Odell and the West Side. Exact dates for each location are pending. President Kerr supports extension work over independent stations and urged legislature accordingly. A related lecture by Professor Dryden of O A C at the Commercial Club rooms February 1 will be illustrated with moving pictures on the chicken business in Oregon and is open to all, especially women and children.

Ice cooling method used to delay apple bloom in Maryland orchard
W F Thomas of Washington owns a 6000 tree Maryland apple orchard. Unseasonably warm weather risked frost bloom so experts advised using 100 tons of ice poured around tree roots to chill sap and prevent blooming. Mr and Mrs A P Johannsen visited The Dalles over the weekend.

Lighting Contract Let to the Hydro Company
The city council signed an 11 year lighting contract with the Hydro Electric Company after J F Batchelder withdrew his injunction suit. The deal allows rate readjustment hearings, fixes maximum rates for small and large users, and sets a 60 day start. Council approval was unanimous except Stranahan. Mayor Blanchar also set salaries for appointive officers.

In the Upper Valley around Parkdale and Woodworth stations O M Bailey filed a complaint with the State Railroad Commission over rates and service. Locals favor the railroad and signed a joint letter crediting its efforts. a postponement was sought and the hearing last Saturday did not occur. The case now targets a late February date. Charles T Barry in charge of railroad properties is in the East. officials withheld details. About 57 percent of residents reportedly back the railroad company via the petition.
