Hood River Commercial Club signs a publicity agreement with the Tl NS company for 30 000 copies of a new valley booklet and 100 000 other pieces plus a Sunset Magazine ad. President Hall and Secretary Skinner lead the effort with the O R & N and Southern Pacific backing.
Members gathered at the I O O F hall on January 10 with Mrs. Rateholder presiding. A focus on current events featured Mise Goff discussing Capitol activities in Washington D C. Scholarship Loan Fund Day planning and the Ladies National League appeal were presented, followed by home picture readings and a reading of a poem about New England homes.
Reports from Philadelphia's Honl River Valley describe Frank Dethman, an apple grower, suspected in a case about a $20000 inheritance claim seen in moving pictures. J H Haage seeks information from the Applegrowers Union. Dethman denies establishing kinship with Mr Haage as letters claim faked orchards. A separate estate settlement ends with W E Allen acquiring and improving Oak Grove district property, while an Oak Grove seat deep office space is advertised for lease in Davidson building.
Burleigh Cash selected as one of six to represent the University of Oregon in the tri state debating league. Debating coach Boeben to announce team placements. Cash expected to lead one of two Oregon teams. Oregon faces Washington in Seattle and Idaho at Eugene on the Federal charter topic for interstate commerce.
In a lengthy reply the Grange argues its opposition to the Assembly plan and defends direct nomination and direct legislation. The letter challenges editorials on politics within the Grange and recalls historical struggles, urging continued support for laws they helped create.
The most beautiful and expensive rug collection ever shown in Hood River is at Stewart's store, imported by Alfred Bros of Portland. One brother supervises the display, with pieces ranging from small door rugs to mammoth carpets. A plush rug valued at 1200 is highlighted. Alfred Atlyveh conducts the showing and invites all to visit. he will remain through Saturday.
Sarah Koplin longtime Lipman Wolf & Co employee and former How River resident died Tuesday after an operation in a Portland hospital. Funeral services were held in Bartmess chapel with Meg W. Gilmore officiating. She is buried at Idlewild cemetery beside her brother, with sister and friend Caro line Barnum accompanying the remains from Home River. The Mt Hood Grange held its January meeting with Mr. Miller presiding. Officers discussed routine business and read a state secretary communication. A plan to elect new hall directors was approved and T M H Larwood was appointed to notify and call a meeting. John Vauthier resigned as treasurer and W Gregory was named to fill the position. The next meeting is set for February 7 at 7 0.
The Hood River Fruit Growers Union dissolves after 17 years to transfer all berry business to the Apple Growers Union for 720 dollars. Shareholders receive pro rata shares. the old union, famed for Wood River fruits, ends, transferring assets including a warehouse and trackage to the Apple Growers Union. The vote was narrowly for dissolution by four votes.
Barefoot and penniless wireless operator Grantham started his 10.1 mile leg from New York August 22 in a wager of 7000 to 2500 to walk around the United States in a year. He must earn or beg in each town, leave with no money, and secure a signature from officials to proceed. He heads to Portland then San Francisco then New Orleans and finally New York, aiming to arrive in six days from departure after Hood Silver.
A mass meeting for the Normal school is set for Friday night at the Opera House. Hood River band will perform and boosters will contribute. Ladies are urged to attend, ministers may join if orderly, and support for the Normal School project is encouraged. Two receptions and card parties hosted by Mrs. W J Gaker and Mrs. Harry DeWitt complemented by Mrs. Seneca Foute of Portland. Decorations featured potted plants Oregon grape and umbrella plants.
In Belmont district the 13 acre tract owned by Lee Smith sold last week to Capt. J M H McCoy of St. Louis for 217000. The land includes four acres that can be cultivated and portions with young trees and timber. McCoy plans to use it as a country home and expects improvements and rental income.
