Mayor McDonald outlines goals for the coming year including road improvements on the east side, expanded water supply, and a rock crusher for street work. He urges enforcement of the local option law and discusses salaries and appointments as the council sets committees and votes on various public works.
The Hood River Merchants Association held its annual meeting with strong attendance. Officers elected include H Vaughan president W B McGuire vice president H Osborne treasurer and E B Woortwils secretary. Directors named were W L Taft I McDonald and E B Brayford.
A first person account from the D. S. Baker steamer describes a brutal voyage from Blalock's Landing to the eastern terminus of the O S N Portland Huntington railroad along the upper Columbia River. An east wind drove sleet and snow, locking the pilot house, freezing windows, and forcing Captain Stump to improvise as ice filled the river and rapid climbs loomed. The crew endured a tense watch, reached Umatilla on schedule, and faced a colder river with floating ice the next dawn.
Commerce Club hears report urging the state to place a new normal school in Hood River citing central location and benefits. Monmouth is noted as a rival site due to existing buildings but its suitability is disputed by others because of bank drainage and other issues.
Incorporators file papers in Multnomah county for a 2 million dollar capital electric railroad venture to serve Hood River valley. J D Wilcox W Minor and KR Smith lead a Portland based partnership aiming to build an electric line from Hood River to Mount Hood district with head offices in Portland.
Hood River Electric Light, Power and Water Company elected H. F. Davidson E. E. Goff and W. F. Chippiny as directors at its January 11 meeting. Hood River Banking and Trust Company named G. Pratt president J. H. Osborne vice president K. W. Pratt cashier M. M. Hill C. H. Stravahan Wilson Pike directors. First National Bank re-elected F. S. Stanley J. W. Hintice A. S. Blowers D. McDonald A. D. Moe to its board with E. O. Manchar cashier and W. Brock assistant cashier. Butler Banking Company holders, meeting last Tuesday, renewed the board: Louis Potter president FW McKercher vice president Truman Butler cashier T. Cox and S. A. French directors. Deposits rose by 3155 000.
The fight over employment agents widens to Spokane after Mayor Pratt refuses to renew licenses on New Year’s Day. Northwest cities Seattle Tacoma and Portland report similar troubles as licenses expire and agencies face closure. Sixty forest rangers enroll at the University of Washington with W T Andrews assisting forestry instruction while Chief Forester Gifford Pinchot may lecture before term end.
