Hood River officials and two electric companies reached a tentative agreement on an equitable rate schedule to take effect May 1 1913. Residential lighting and cooking rates were cut with minimum charges set, and commercial rates adjusted to 45 kilowatt hours per load. The agreement was reviewed in a public hearing with protests from some attorneys and was to be considered by the Railroad Commission.

Gang of Boys Caught Thieving in Local Businesses
A group of eight boys aged 11 to 16 was caught Friday night by Deputy Marshal Hart after breaking into a vinegar factory, Taft Transfer Co, and Star Grocery. They took a few dollars and bottles of pop, then faced County Judge Castner and County Attorney Wilbur who gave them a severe talking to and released them after parental promises to control them.

State Allocates 688 for Hood River County Fair
Under a new law Hood River will receive 688.43 from the state for county fair expenses or for county road work if unused. The Legislature repealed district fair funding but authorized counties to hold county agricultural fairs with a three person county fair board. An annual fair tax of 1-20th mill is provided, and warrants will be issued June 15, 1915, to county treasurers for 1913 fair support.

Last Wednesday the Hydro Electric Company connected its new street lighting system and the city is now better lit. Delays in supplies slowed completion. Hood River Gas & Electric previously lit the city. Lights use Mazda lamps with horizontal reflectors. Additional lights were installed in outskirts under the city contract. Hood River Gas & Electric poles are used under a leasing agreement for a common fee.

Toll Charge Cut Between Upper and Lower Valleys
The State Railroad Commission ordered a reduction in tolls for telephone service between the upper and lower valleys. The switching charge drops to five cents, business party line remains eight dollars per quarter, and residential party lines stay at three dollars and seventy-five cents in the Upper Valley. A 76 cent advance payment credit is authorized. Local residents urged further cuts during berry and apple harvesting.
