Honey Grove Mayor John W. Luttrell will sign a proclamation for Western Week from July 10 to 15. The city and the Honey Grove Round Up Club celebrate the Clubs 32nd C R A Championship Rodeo produced by Curtis Malone of Tyler. The rodeo runs July 13 14 15 with town residents urged to attend.
Paris Junior College announces a July 7 8 30 a m start in the Student Center Ballroom for new and returning students. New students report to Records Office. returning students go to the ballroom. Courses include General Geology taught by Bill King 10 10 to 11 50 with lab 11 50 to 1 30 four credits. Other offerings include air conditioning mechanics biology chemistry English German government physical sciences photography golf music nursing learning skills mathematics badminton tennis. Classes begin July 10 with late registration to July 13 and end August 15.
The Honey Grove Round Up Club hosts the 32nd C R A Championship Rodeo with a Thursday parade at Crockett Park starting 6 p m. July 13 inviting all area riding clubs to join. Wolfe City Riding Club won last year and the Honey Grove Drill Team will lead the grand entry Friday under Mrs Peggy Carpenter. Saturday features The Texan Westernairs from Euless for entertainment.
Paris judge Henry Braswell sentences Jerry Wayne Sewell of Ravenna to 10 years in the Texas Department of Corrections on a May 25 trial. The total term stacks with an existing 25 year sentence from Fannin County to 35 years. Sewell’s attorney notes an appeal as he is placed with U.S. marshals.
Texas highway and street fatalities year to date total 1,626, up from 1,451 last year. Deaths in 1,406 accidents exceed 1,275 in 1977, an increase of about 10 percent, according to the Department of Public Safety.
A 22 year old Duncanville woman Elizabeth Diane Kemp sustained cuts and bruises when her 1975 Toyota crossed the center line and ran under a semi trailer in front of the Post Office. Central Freight driver Richard Leon Denham of Lubbock reported the truck was stationary as the car wedged beneath it. The wreckage took over two hours to clear and Kemp was treated and released at a Paris hospital.
Two Honey Grove High School classes schedule reunions this weekend. The Class of 1968 hosts a ten year reunion on Saturday July 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Civic Center with Betty Stephenson coordinating at 817 429 2364. The Class of 1973 holds a five year reunion on Sunday July 2.
Former Fannin County Sheriff Ray mond Taylor received a total 29 year prison term and a $25,000 fine on three counts of racketeering after pleading guilty to accepting bribes to permit prostitution, gambling and drug trafficking in Northeast Texas. Judge William M. Steger said there was “no mercy” for such crimes, ordering 20 years on the first count and nine years on the other two to run concurrently.
Jane Black of Honey Grove has been named recipient of an Opportunity Awards Scholarship at Texas A&M University. The 1978 Honey Grove High School graduate was chosen from about 2,600 applicants, among 300 freshmen selected for the scholarship program aiding students with strong academic records and financial need. Texas A&M, founded as a land grant university, now enrolls about 30,000 students.
The band Pure Country II will perform at the Rodeo Arena dances on Friday and Saturday nights after the Honey Grove Rodeo shows. Members include Ronny Lyle Raydean Seawright James Byram Earl Gaddy and Tony Cox. They have backed artists like Tony Douglas Moe Bandy Ernest Tubbs Jerry Clower and Johnny Paycheck and played before 13 000 at the 1976 State FFA Convention.
Judge Henry Braswell of 6th District Court sets Jerry Wayne Sewell for a July 17 trial in Paris on drug charges. Sewell of Ravenna already received 25 and 10 year sentences for drug sales, to run consecutively. Braswell also set July 7 for the next Fannin County Grand Jury session.
Over 30 entries have signed up for the third annual Honey Grove Open Golf Tournament at the Honey Grove Municipal Golf Course, set to begin Sunday and run through Tuesday.
Entries from Dallas, Sherman, and Paris join local golfers for a 36 hole July 4 event. Qualifying runs to July 1 with four men’s flights and one ladies flight, prizes for top finishers, shotgun start Sunday at 1 pm and Tuesday at 9 am, closest to pin on hole 9 rewards a dozen golf balls, sponsored by Riverside Chemical Co, Honey Grove Lions Club, Jackson Insurance, Mackenzie United Methodist Church, and Hurl Stanford Garage.
Blood donors are needed for Tony Stailey of Ladonia, a patient at M. D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. He requires 16 pints of blood and donations may be made at Greenville hospital to help Tony Stailey.
Jim Thomas vice president Fiscal Affairs at Paris Junior College was elected treasurer of the Texas Association of Public Junior College Business Officers at the annual meeting held June 8 and 9 at the Laredo Hilton Inn. He is married to Barbara O Connor, with two children, and resides in Paris.
Mr and Mrs James L Carpenter are proud parents of a baby daughter named Misty Dawn. The newborn arrived at 8 46 a m Sunday June 25 1978 at McCuistion Hospital in Paris weighing 5 pounds 5 ounces. Grandparents are Ethyl Clark of Joplin Missouri and Kenneth Free and his wife of Yates Center Kansas.
A Windom community picnic is set for Tuesday evening July 4th at the Windom Softball Field. Activities start at 6 with games contests a softball game and something for everyone. Attendees are asked to bring a 4 sack lunch for the family and drinks will be sold at the concession stand.
The city moves the roll off container to North 5th Street near City Hall. Beginning July 1 a $2.00 fee will apply for small containers and $7.50 for pickup loads at the trailer site. Regular residential and business pickups remain unchanged.
Honey Grove School District sees several children joining a summer meal program sponsored by the Texas Department of Human Resources. Meals run Monday through Friday with breakfast from 7 40 to 8 30 and lunch from 11 30 to 12 45. The district aims to boost participation among school age children.
