Founders and pioneers of Honey Grove in early Texas
Benjamin S. Walcott born in Rhode Island moved to Texas in 1846 and founded Honey Grove with partner Samuel Erwin. He donated land for a school and church, built the first flour mill and a native stone building, co founded the First National Bank, and later ran the Walcott Institute. Betsy Gilmer Walcott shaped the town’s formation. The Gilmer and Walcott families produced several later Honey Grove leaders and residents.
