Southwestern Bell seeks $471.5 million rate hike in Texas
Southwestern Bell filed with the Texas Public Utility Commission for a 13.4 percent statewide revenue increase to fund rising costs and depreciation changes. The plan includes higher one party residential and business rates, a new dishonored check charge, and private line price adjustments, while long distance and coin rates would stay unchanged. Paul Roth said the move ensures adequate earnings on Texas investment and supports continued service quality.

Fresno State slugger Terry Pendleton grandson of Mrs. Ruth Turner signed a pro baseball contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. Pendleton, a Channel Islands High and Oxnard College product from Port Hueneme, heads to spring training in St. Petersburg and then to the Cardinals farm in Johnson City. The 21-year-old set Fresno State records with 98 hits and a 24 game hitting streak, earned All-District 8 and third team All-America honors, and was team captain for the Condors before two years at Fresno State.

School officials express satisfaction with Texas Assessment of Basic Skills results across grades three five and the ninth exit level. Grade three shows two weak areas order of whole numbers and select units of measure with 65 and 71 percent mastery. Grade five features four 100 percent areas and two weaker math areas and reading areas needing focus. Ninth grade exit results are notably higher with math emphasis on solving problems using fractions measurement units ratio and proportion and division. Reading strengths include following written directions and cause and effect while identifying main idea and predicting outcomes need improvement. Overall progress over two years fuels higher performance goals and ongoing efforts.
