Jack Shelton was appointed Honey Grove postmaster effective June 12. Leon Dudley administered the oath Friday. Edna Lee Brandrick continues as officer in charge after serving since February’s death of Ed Jackson. The Dallas region announced 35 postmaster appointments under the merit system. Texas received 29 and Louisiana 4.

Mrs Johnson Retires From Teaching at Borden County
Mrs Flora Johnson a former Flora Cuttler and daughter of the late Oscar Cuttler retires after fourteen years teaching third grade at Gail Schools previously teaching in Fannin and Lamar counties. She is a Commerce High School graduate with a BS from East Texas State University Commerce. Her husband Fagan operates a local auto and gas business in Lamesa and daughter Carroll Stone teaches in Lamesa schools. The couple have one grandson Lance Stone. Active in school affairs she served as TSTA unit secretary vice-president and president in 1968 1969. A photo album engraved tray and candy dish were presented by students Parents Club and faculty at her retirement celebrations.

Holdup Men Get 15 Year Sentences
Two Dallas men Fred Louis Bell and Charles Lavern Beasley were found guilty in Federal Court at Paris of robbing the Farmers and Merchants State Bank of Ladonia in 1968. They received 15 year sentences from U S District Court Judge William Steger after a 12 member jury heard the case. About $15 000 was taken in daylight robbery and led to a widespread manhunt before arrests in Dallas and the eastern United States.

The Honey Grove Round Up Club launches its 26th annual rodeo with a parade at 6:00 p m Thursday June 17 followed by nightly rodeo shows at 8 15 p m Thursday through Saturday. Bemis Johnson Inc producer promises the wildest stock and a bigger show than last year. Officials include DR Black president Bryan Pierce vice president Bob Elliott committee head Bob Elliott with Dan Knowles and Bill Stanley on the board. Parade prizes total 50 with 25 15 and 10 for first second and third. Added money of 250 funds rodeo events along with trophy belt buckles for each event.

Honey Grove ISD Board Meets Approves Budget and Staffing
The Honey Grove Independent School District board met Monday evening. They approved May financials and bills, authorized a Garland range purchase with 75 percent federal funding, and 2 percent local. They appointed an insurance agent, accepted resignations of Wesley Wright and Coach Jackie Hendrix, and planned new hires including a fulltime elementary custodian and a sixth grade teacher. An athletic budget of 6000 dollars plus insurance was approved. An agreement with the federal government for lunch, milk, and breakfast programs was approved. The First State Bank was designated as district depository for two years. A building study committee was formed to review maintenance, field house, shop, windows, air conditioning, and ceilings.

Coach Jerry Smith Resigns for Winnsboro Post
Honey Grove high school head basketball coach Jerry Smith tendered his resignation Tuesday morning after four years. Superintendent D E Brooks said Smith will take a similar 2A position in the Winnsboro school system. Smith, a Ladonia native and East Texas State University graduate, previously coached in Gober.

Windom Rodeo Club Finals and Winners Named
The Windom Rodeo Club marked its seventh annual Rodeo with Gene Daniels of Windom named stock producer. Winners included Coy Jenton of Greenville in bareback with 52, Dub Reeves of Dodd City in calf roping with 11.6, Nancy Birdcell of Denison posting the best barrel time of 18.6, and a 57 tie in bull riding by David Nichols of Bonham and Coy Jenton. Denison won the parade, Honey Grove Drill team led pivots, and the club thanks supporters under president Newman Perry.

Edward J. Laird 69 a native of Tannin County and retired Jumble of Company employee was found dead of natural causes at his home in Paris. An inquest was held by Justice of the Peace Chester Oakes. He moved to Paris four years ago from Kingsville and his body was to be remarried there Tuesday afternoon. Service at Piper Memorial Home with burial in Chamberlain Cemetery. Born Oct 7 1901, he was married to Leda Lee Guedry who died in 1965. Surviving are three daughters one son in law and two grandsons and a sister.
