Bonham hosts the Annual Friends of Sam Rayburn Barbecue on Saturday June 18 featuring seven pro jazz musicians. Region VIII To Display Textbooks For 1984 Adoption
Region VIII Education Service Center will display proposed textbooks for Texas public schools starting September 1984. Viewings run 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 4:30 to 7 p.m. on the third Thursday monthly. no appointment needed. Subjects include ESL grades 6-12, language and composition, math, history, Latin, French, marketing, and trades. The proclamation from the State Board of Education lists a total price of 42,904,839 dollars.

5 Cost Of Living Increase Delayed
The automatic Social Security cost of living increase, usually effective each July, will be delayed six months to January 1984 under a new law to strengthen the system. Gus Jones, Social Security district manager in Sherman, Texas, cited the move as a money saver and a step toward financial stability. The law also raises the 1984 payroll tax rate to 7.0 percent for both employees and employers, with a 0.3 percent employee tax credit. 1988 self employment taxes will begin at 14.0 percent in 1984, then 2.3 percent in 1985 and 2.0 percent for 1986–89, with future deductions replacing credits after 1989. Steven W. Glover 31 of Paris is nominated for the Clint Dunagan Award for top regional directors. His entry was submitted by Texas Jaycees President Dennis Dohrer and will be decided at the 63rd Annual Meeting June 20 to 23 in Hartford. He led 17 chapters, added seven, and grew regional membership by 50 percent while serving as regional director for the Texas Jaycees. Glover works as a Contract Manager for the Texas Department of Human Resources and resides with wife Mary and two children. He is a Honey Grove native, son of Owen and the late Ann Glover.
