The Holbrook oil field shows a surge of activity with three drilling rigs en route and a contract awarded to a major California company for a well. At least six wells are planned to start before August first, signaling rapid development.
Senator S G Mayfield has bought a one fourth interest in Aztec Land and Cattle Company oil lease from Governor Meiklejohn and Jack Marden. Judge J P Ryan and Thomas McCauley gain large shares across an 18 by 12 mile Holbrook anticline area, with multiple rigs planned within 30 days. Geologist Charles E Major aided site selection amid preparations to load and ship a standard rig, with overland haul via Winslow and trucks.
Fay Mills returns from Seven Lakes where three rigs must be moved to the Gallup railroad. Trucks failed. General Manager Harold E. Dodd calls on the mule to finish the task. Mills notes that just before reaching Seven Lakes the company involved began actions to secure the necessary aid.
C. E. Major, famed geologist and mining engineer, visited Holbrook after months in the oil field. He helped select the first well site on Senator Mayfield’s land, with a second rig promised by Midwest by July 15. Holbrook Oil Co led by George D. Meiklejohn has large holdings and contracts forming with Bakersfield parties for early developments.

R E Warren of the Midwest Oil Co Casper passed through Holbrook on Saturday at 4 oclock en route to Los Angeles where the Warren family own a summer home. He spent a short time with Jack Marden on business concerning the lease Midwest holds on acreage in the Aztec tract before proceeding to Winslow.
Mr. Chas Promley geologist for the Midwest Oil Co has spent about ten days in the field. He was recalled to Denver and will return in a few days to continue work in the companys interest.
Hon A R Oleson, former Nebraska Supreme Court judge now in Berkley California, visited Holbrook with his family Monday evening en route to Omaha. He was joined by his old friend Governor Meiklejohn who spoke of the local field.
Col J C Rankin veteran mining man of Arizona now taking interest in the Holbrook field is expected here this evening.
In a meeting held last week the Holbrook Oil Company directors reached a decision on company matters. The proceedings reflect the board’s plans and direction for the near term.
Irving A Jennings of Taylor Arizona is chosen for the first marine corps officers training camp at Quantico Virginia. He enlisted in 1917 at Salt Lake City and now trains to command marines in front line duties. A second camp will open August 1 followed by a third in November. Holbrook youths head to Los Angeles for navy enlistment exams.
C R Fillerup, agr icultural agent for Navajo and Apache counties, announced a Farm Loan Association for Apache county was formed in Eager on June 5. Officers are Connor Trammell president Springerville Orson Wilkins vice president Nutrioso Lee Bradford secretary treasurer Eagar. Appraising committee includes W M Tenney Alpine Harry Udall Eagar and Albert Woods Springerville. Board of directors comprises B B Crosby Edmond Nelson W W Eagar and Geo Eagar.
Notice from D C Feemster of San Dimas California seeking return of a blue coat containing traveler s checks and a Texas chauffeur s badge lost between Holbrook and St Johns. Notify if found.
The D. J. Thomas home celebrated Miss Rachel Thomas as hostess with a Saturday night gathering. Guests enjoyed cards and dancing, with Miss Wallace and Mr. Hagan winning high card scores and Miss Greer and Mr. Smithson taking consolation prizes. Honorees Miss Greer of St Johns and Mr. Harold Barnes of Lockport were given guest prizes as fruit punch and iced coffee plus cake concluded the festive event. out of town guest Miss Helen Schuster of Los Angeles attended.
August H. Hansen of Winslow writes June 18 asking his copy mailed to Arcadia California. He serves with the 66th Balloon Co. recently arrived at the California camp from Omaha. He mentions his wife joining him later this week and a new camp at Lucky Baldwin’s old race track near Los Angeles.
The band of the 158th Regiment at Camp Kearny was warmly received in Holbrook, with a large audience at Friday’s concert. A local defense council collection totaled 90.49, leaving 40.39 after expenses as Holbrook citizens’ contribution. Earlier, cars were provided for a Petrified Forest trip.
Holbrook mayor GEO W Hennessey proclaims June 28 1918 as war savings day urging citizens to pledge for war savings stamps from June 10 to 28. The town aims to support national war needs with a target of five million two hundred sixty thousand dollars in 1918. Also notes Chauncey J Woods of the American Expeditionary Forces in France making a fine anti aircraft battery record.
Holbrook topped Flagstaff 13 to 11 on the local diamond last Sunday afternoon in a closely contested contest witnessed by a large crowd. The visiting Flagstaff club reported the game as lively with spirited play and a friendly reception from Holbrook fans, promising a rematch.

H. J. Ramer well known county stockman died Wednesday night at the home of Preston Bushman near Dry Lake after a chest pain. He had traveled from Holbrook to a Wallace & Bly cattle ranch in Tonto Basin earlier that day. An inquest attributed death to apoplexy caused by high blood pressure. The body, embalmed, was brought to Holbrook for Masonic funeral arrangements likely Sunday morning pending a brother’s arrival.
Andrew Baumert Jr. of Phoenix secretary of the republican state central committee spent several days this week in Navajo and Apache counties organizing party members for the coming campaign. He met with the editor of the News for a pleasant call Monday. Baumert expresses confidence in victory this fall for Thomas E. Campbell for governor and expects the party to elect many others on county and state tickets.
