Jurors in a rural town awake late after ice cream and soda clash with courthouse timing. A sleepy juror darts through streets to reach the eight o clock deadline thinking it nine, only to arrive, gasp, and learn the joke. He vows to get even as coffee and pie await.
The Holbrook church reports four good lots valued at 400 dollars and a building contract at 1394.45 with furnishings at 237.08 and sundry incidentals 58.70 totaling 2090.23. Gifts include a organ from First Methodist Los Angeles. over fifty contributors, mainly Holbrook residents, with 400 dollars from the church extension society. Unpaid subscriptions may be settled by July 1 at local banks. accounts are open for inspection.
D V Marley of Young and W J Griffin of Flagstaff visited Holbrook this week while Jesus Garcia and E Armije of St Johns attended court on county business. Mrs Milo Webb passed through Holbrook en route to Los Angeles, and Prof O R Ripley, formerly a local teacher, is in town on court matters. Thirty carloads of cattle shipped out yesterday to Kansas and Colorado yielded sizeable profits. Uncle John Connor, an early Holbrook settler, is visiting, and Senator Isaac Barth from Albuquerque, with sister Clara Barth, was here for legal matters before returning to St Johns.
News notes several marriages in the region. Mr. Thomas Benjiman Long and Miss Mamie Baca will wed in Heber on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. June 26, drawing a large circle of admirers. Previous unions include William Warren and Eliza Lopez celebrated at High Mass with a breakfast and ball at Ortega's hall, and James Brookbank and Winona Barbour wed at Mrs. Eliza Smith's Snowflake home on June 4. The bride taught in Dry Lake and both unions are praised. more marriages are rumored forthcoming.
Holbrook and surrounding towns report numerous visitors for court business political visits and social events. Notables include J H Frost and Alfred Ruiz from Snowflake Galup and Prescott attendees Ed Howell and Victor Redwell. The community notes cattle trades marriages deaths and family travel across Snowflake Flagstaff Winslow and Phoenix.
Mrs. Sidney Sapp entertained Holbrook members of the H and A Lodge with a supper hosted by her daughters. The evening featured flowers, a damask table, and a wedding anniversary gift for the host couple. Other notes mention livestock court matters, new Winona Wagons arrivals, and residents’ visits to Heber, St Johns, Williams, and Los Angeles with long Beach pleasure highlights.
Miss Ruby Luken of Tempe arrived in Holbrook with her two nephews for a pleasant visit with Miss Ruth Crouse and departed on No 8 yesterday for Kansas City where the boys will spend the summer with relatives. After a brief stay in Kansas City she will continue to other eastern points including New York.
A series of special meetings will be held at the Methodist church next week with full day services planned for June 29. Rev E D Raley will assist the pastor and topics include Christian Baptism John the Baptist Why Christ Came to Earth Jesus Christ's Methods of Work and The Kingdom Christ Came to Establish. Further announcements will follow and all are invited to join in prayer for Thy Kingdom Come.
Charles Cooley wears the Stephens trophy for the finest local range shooting. He posted 47x50 in the event with 24x25 in the first and 23x25 in the second at Holbrook Gun Club’s regular shoot last Sunday. Ideal weather drew a lively crowd of spectators and participants.
