On Flag Day June 14, Al Thane Cook, Federal Administrator of the Smith-Sears Act for California, Nevada and Arizona, visited Holbrook to register wounded veterans for special training. Wounded locals including Albert Blevins and Wilfred Brews signaled acceptance, with Winslow veterans like Jess Fears and Norman Bennett joining later. many injuries stemmed from shrapnel shells.

Town Council Considers Sidewalk Needs and Appointments

The Town Council met Wednesday to discuss adding sidewalks and prefers citizen input before a sidewalk ordinance. The County Engineer was asked to study sidewalk levels within town limits. At the prior meeting T. F. McClanahan was named Town Marshal, M. P. Cousins Building Inspector, Thorvald Larson Town Attorney, B. B. Neel Town Clerk, and J. A. Morrow Town Engineer.

Wind River Company reports drilling at the Wind River-Hopi well continues without interruption with the depth at least 600 feet. Hard formations slow progress but management remains hopeful that once this strata is passed drilling will speed up and the crew will advance rapidly.

Must Cancel Revenue Stamps Under Internal Revenue Rules

The Office of the Collector of Internal Revenue in Phoenix warns dealers to cancel stamps used to collect the tax on toilet and medicinal articles. Many uncancelled stamps were found on taxable items from drug stores. Regulations require stamps to be canceled or affixed so destruction occurs upon opening the package. The vendor name and date must appear on the canceled stamp. enforcement will be strict and penalties include a fine up to 100 dollars.

Sergt Richard P Schuster son of Adolph Schuster arrived in Holbrook from Camp Upton where he was discharged after overseas service. He will stay three to four days then travel to Los Angeles to visit his mother. In France he attended officers training at Samar and studied commercial law and French at the University at Montpelier. In Holbrook he renews acquaintances with many friends.
