Hon R C Smith spends time in outlying district schools and leaves keys to his office. The office reports business as very dull with no funds found. Zeke Newman, noted wool merchant of Northern Arizona, travels overland to Phoenix by horse and carriage, expected to arrive within a week.
Acting secretary of the interior withdraws about 47 000 acres of coal bearing land from entry in the Black Mesa forest reserve Navajo county effective November 29. Applications have been filed since the withdrawal and are to be forwarded to Washington for approval. Lands lie north ranges 18 19 east, beyond 15 miles from railroads at $10 an acre with higher potential values under appraisal. The move aims to protect potential value while department examines the lands. The article also notes a new school building nearing occupancy with credit to Rod Gardner and carpenters Bartlett and Daum.
