Holbrook police investigate a theft of more than $1500 from Whipple's Department Store. Manager Johnnie McDaniels reported a bank deposit bag containing $973 in cash and $611 in checks and slips missing from a desk drawer after 4:30 p.m. and found overdue at 6 p.m.

Consolidation Seen for Apache and Sitgreaves Forest Offices
Stan Tixier district forester of Sitgreaves National Forest told Holbrook Rotarians the proposed consolidation of Apache and Sitgreaves forests seems likely though Regional Forester William Hurst has not ruled. He said phase out could begin in six months with about 20 Holbrook staff affected and additional clerical staff moved within the Southwestern Region as vacancies open.

The 6 million scrubber project at APS Cholla plant Joseph City will go back on line this week after 16 months of construction. It uses a two stage wash to reduce fly ash by 95 percent and meets EPA and state standards, powered by two 1,750 hp motors with backup 500 hp diesel, and requires eight tons daily of limestone slurry.

Snowflake residents lead in Holbrook Christmas drawing
Mrs. Oscar Boyd of Snowflake won $100 in the first Christmas Drawing by the Holbrook Tribune-News and 29 firms. Johnny Keams, Beatriz Moyta, and Marcia Sherwood took second through fourth with $50 $25 and $15 prizes. Six $10 winners included Marlene Becenti and others. Five dollar script prizes went to 10 winners. About 20,000 people registered from dozens of communities across the region during four weeks of promotion with addresses from many towns and states. Prizes paid in $5 script redeemable at participating firms.
