State agency approves APS Cholla Unit 5 plans near Joseph City
State Siting Committee last Friday backed Over 300 Million for Cholla Unit 5 at the Cholla Power Plant near Joseph City. Heavy construction to begin fall 1980 with peak work mid 1981 and completion targeted 1985. Cost estimated 300 to 350 million. 350 MW unit to employ about 60 workers and 1.8 million annual payroll. APS officials cite 1985 in service date and potential 16.6 million annual savings to customers over 30 year life. Regional benefits include reduced oil-fired generation and energy sales to nearby utilities.

Northern Arizona economy may dodge deeper downturn says NAU talk
An economic outlook conference in Flagstaff drew about 325 attendees who heard that a national downturn is likely next year but NAU economist James N. Morgan warned Northern Arizona may resist more because movers from colder states are choosing warmer regions and rural areas. He cited Northern Arizona’s strong growth in population income employment and retail sales in the 1970s and projected continued local expansion with rising jobs and output over the next five years.

Lacer suit seeks return of Navajo County courthouse site
The Lacer case opens in St Johns Tuesday with Mary Zack Lacer suing Navajo County to reclaim the old courthouse site and adjacent land. The 1898 deed granted the land to her father Fra A Zuck for courthouse and jail use, but county plans to keep the current facilities.
