Weekly note reports Holbrook lifting quarantine on certain businesses while schools remain closed awaiting next Monday. The piece questions the necessity of the Holbrook quarantine amid higher cases in Winslow and urges a county inquiry into health board correspondence.
A World War I era note dated January 23 1918 on YMCA stationery from Private Warren Savage Battery C 5th F A thanks the Holbrook Knitting Club for a Christmas box. He expresses appreciation describes hospital stay and describes sunny day and glistening church spires in France.
The Holbrook chapter reports strong interest from the ladies as yarn arrives and Mrs Garri son, Supt of Knitting, offers to set up sweaters for volunteers. A large shipment is expected soon and this week’s contributors include Annie Wallace Ruth Kelly Mrs Saxton Mrs Harp Goldie Greer Mrs Farwell Mrs Kra mer Miss McMillan Mrs Morse and a pair of socks.
Holbrook public schools will reopen next Monday at the usual hour after a ten day smallpox quarantine. Buildings have been fumigated and the health officer assures the superintendent that it is safe to resume classes. Prof. Dolman urges all pupils to report for duty at the usual opening time.
Knitting club met last Wednesday at Mrs D J Thomas home with a score of ladies attending a delightful afternoon. Five sweaters were finished recently and Mrs Neels mother Mrs Saxton completed two. Other members include Mesdames Earp Chamberlin Neel Wrist ts and Mickey.
In a January 1918 letter from France Marshall H. Flake thanks Mrs. Chamberlin and the Holbrook knitting club for a warm sweater. He describes his service with Co. D of the 502 Engineer Battalion, lonesome yet well treated, and details camp comfort, a bath house, reading room, moving pictures at the Y M C A, and his work on a cement dam supplying water for a hospital. He sends regards to Mr. Chamberlin.
The notice requires 33 percent wheat flour substitutes in all pies and doughnuts on wheatless days. Bread or roll portions are capped at two ounces per person per meal. rolls not to exceed one ounce unless served alone as corn, oatmeal, bran varieties may reach four ounces. Hotels and restaurants using three or more barrels of flour monthly must obtain a license, effective February 4. County assessor Fay Gardner announces he will not run again after completing his second term. He plans to retire and devote time to his Woodruff farm. He thanks voters for their support and the courtesies shown during his terms.
Mrs D J Thomas will welcome Holbrook ladies next Monday afternoon for a meeting of patriotic social divisions. Besides needlework and cards, an additional feature will be offered. Money offered at these affairs supports Red Cross funds, aiding the organization as membership grows from 500000 to 23000000, underscoring the need for continual income to sustain mercy work.
Griffiths epic The Birth of a Nation plays at the Pastime Theater with two showings, 3 PM and 8 PM, on Wednesday March 13. The production is presented as in New York City and touted as a historic, record breaking drama.
Judge J. P. Ryan of Chloride returns from Los Angeles and San Francisco after ten days promoting the Oil Developing Co. and reports strong interest in the Holbrook district. Visitors include W A Carathers of San Bernardino and Wm McKay of Kingman. A geologist is awaited to study the region with delays blamed on prior cold weather and illness among earlier specialists.
Mrs. Bitorino Padilla returned from Camp Kearny Linda Vista California where she visited her son Tranquilino Padilla. She notes the government cares for the boys well and says mothers should be proud of their sons in the U. S. Army. Her son is healthier and happy as a soldier.
Government opens nationwide loan program for binoculars telescopes and spy glasses to aid the Navy. Citizens may send instruments to the Naval Observatory Washington with name and return address on package. If kept a rental of 1 dollar applies. if lost the government may reimburse purchase price.
Fred Thompson, a young Indian, was shot by Ignacio Lizan, proprietor near Lupton on Monday evening after an argument in Lizan’s trading store. Thompson died next day as officers held a coroner’s inquest and Lizan faced murder charges in St Johns after failing to post bond.
All selective service men post final acceptance must report for dental exams to listed city dentists or any other local dentist. State Director John A. Lentz directs under Lt. W. A. Heckard. Garron to Los Angeles for ill children. Quinlan runs Holbrook/Babbitt Bros. in absence.
Judge Standford grants Campbell an extra fifteen days to pay the Hunt judgment in the gubernatorial dispute. Judge Sloan sends a $2460.00 good faith check from Campbell supporters, reducing the remaining balance to $1662.25 of the $4122.25 total. Many Californians confuse the fund as Campbell’s salary. officials note Hunt’s costs and 1917 mediator pay are separate. Remaining funds are expected to arrive as counties contribute.
Guy E. Cornelius, city superintendent of Winslow schools, is sworn in as Navajo County food administrator with full federal authority to enforce the food control act and regulate licenses. The move aims to strengthen the national program by appointing county admins across Arizona. Timothy A. Riordan praises Cornelius and calls for strong local support.
Secretary McAdoo warns that neither banks nor the rich alone can raise the vast wartime funds. He calls for united American effort across all citizens regardless of party or gender to sustain the war and aid allies. A light rain fell last night with mild temperatures and forecasts of more rain, noted as beneficial to farms and ranges.
James G. Colter, father of Hon Fred T. Colter, is elected Vice President of Prescott's Pioneer's Historical Society. Colter, a seasoned Apache County settler, crossed the plains in the 1870s and introduced the first reaper and threshing machine in the state. He divides his time between Prescott and Phoenix, renowned for vigor and frontier lore.
